Boylan takes charge of the chapters from Lily's point of view. I guess you do hear it, somehow, subconsciously. A huge thank you to NetGalley and Ballentine books for providing me with a review copy of this novel. Were you surprised or did you already know? And your heart will break for the main characters. And if you feed a larva only royal jelly, it develops into a queen. But this can also blow up in one's face. I enjoyed this novel - don't worry, as always, Jodi gives you a giant twist. It was grueling, it was really hard. She also inherited her father's bee colony. There are things that I've wanted to write about for a long time, about identity and about how we become who we are, and Jenny and I have very different lived experiences, as women, in this country.

Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone. And when the bees there forage those plants, the honey that is created is almost hallucinogenic and very physically dangerous if you ingest that honey. I really liked Lily and her story is so heartbreaking. I appreciated that this was an Own Voices novel. She even feels some guilt that she has kept her son from his father.

And the question is, to what degree is our history who we are now? And that's really important, because knowing who she was, that informs who she became, which is really the whole message of the book. Among the things that Jodi really took point on was doing the deep dive into Olivia's past. We're here to be ourselves, in all our gnarly brilliance. She was incredibly obsessed with the bees. They each took turns writing chapters, and it was impossible for me to tell whose writing was whom's.
