The Man Behind The Maps is a fantastic book showcasing the amazing work of "Mr Trail Maps", legendary Ski Artist James Niehues. I guess the one that kind of stands out is Deer Valley was one of my first ones and I had the honor of meeting Edgar Stern, who originated Deer Valley. Then I would drop to lower elevations and get a lot of detail down about 500 feet above the summit and get the background. I asked my pilot, a very capable young lady, if there might be a place we could set the plane down before Vancouver, I didn't think I could make that distance. I don't think I had anything on Beaver. How has what you do changed since you first started in the '80s? This is the book that every snow lover needs in their house and on their coffee table. You have so many different Utah regional maps that you have done. It's a very smooth technique.
Your miniature artworks both adorn the walls of ski legends like Chris Davenport and litter the ground below chairlifts. I can't get into a landscape without actually mapping it. And she was certainly key in picking Todd and Ben. I had imagined a book by the mid-1990s since I had painted quite a few large resorts by then and felt that by the end of my career I would have quite a collection, which could be put into a coffee table book. You can come in and shade the side of the mountain that is a steeper side of the mountain. Once the sketch is approved, all the detail must be transferred exactly onto the painting surface.
