The Taking Of Annie Thorne Synopsis — 30 Day Forecast For Bay City

People lie or they deny the past. On the wall smeared in blood are the words "he is not my son". I loved this book and I really, really love the writing style of CJ Tudor. 🙂 During The Taking of Annie Thorne there are moments when you will find yourself 'reading with one eye open, gripping your book tight. The main character, Joe, is not particularly likeable, but interesting, yes. The book kept me wanting to turn the pages to find out what happened next. Set in a bleak Nottinghamshire pit-village and time hopping between the 1990's and the present day, it has everything you could wish for in a spinechiller and then more – it is creepy, exciting, immensely readable and fabulously well written.

The Taking Of Annie Thorne Summary

When Joe Thorne receives an email with the words "I know what happened to your sister. Apart from a bit of scene setting at the outset the novel is told in the first person from Joe Thorne's point of view. The Taking of Annie Thorne by C J Tudor is a thriller with plenty of horror moments thrown in. I read the book in two sittings as I could not put it down, it's one of those books you think just one more chapter and one turns into ten. The deaths are very mysterious with no obvious explanation given, only a shocking message left scrawled across the wall of a bedroom, written in blood. I've never really liked the term 'page-turner' but this definitely falls into that category. Having read THE CHALK MAN by the same author I was desperate to read this one as soon as I could.

The Taking Of Annie Thorne Review

You have dibs on that dungeon for the rest of your life. Years later Joe, now an unemployed teacher receives a email from an anonymous sender informing him that strange things were happening again in his home town. Tudor's debut novel, The Chalk Man, is also still available. The Taking of Annie Thorne is told in a dual timeline; we learn the history of the characters and what happened in the past, and we see some of those same characters back as adults. As I said in my introduction above, I read this book a lot quicker than I was reading other books of a similar length. I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review. With any mystery or thriller, one of the greatest aspects of this kind of narrative is the characters and their backstory.

The Taking Of Annie Thorne

This was staggeringly good. The Chalk Man was reminiscent of Stand By Me and IT, whilst The Taking of Annie Thorne bears strong similarities to another of King's books – however, to name the title might be considered a significant spoiler – if you really want to know, click here. Joe grew up in Arnhill, he went to the school, he had his gang of mates, and he had a sister. He is in serious financial debt but a trip back home, to where it all went wrong, offers Joe the only solution he can think of to survive the life and death situation he has put himself in. The author has managed to craft a character that gave me the chills. Joe Thorn's sister Annie went missing when she was eight years old, twenty four hours later she came home but would not say where she had been and was acting strangely. But as we shall discover Arnhill has a history that predates the mimes.

The Taking Of Annie Thorne Book

Now years later, Joe finds himself back in his hometown and what happened to Annie could possibly be happening again. So, let's start at the beginning, the prologue is incredibly gripping and one that sets the tone well for the rest of the book. Joe has bad debts – and bad people – he needs to escape. The Taking of Annie Thorne is her second novel, following on from the her very successful debut, The Chalk Man. CJ Tudor is a brilliant storyteller. Again, there are elements of Stephen King's horror/supernatural, and the kind of ghost stories you'd tell your friends at sleepovers, but told in a way that, apart from a few paragraphs, is actually not as graphic as her previous novel in it's gruesome nature, but more psychological; the fear and terror leaks out of the chapters and fills you with an overwhelming sense of dread. Could it be that his on the run from the people he owes money too, could it be that he just wants to come back to a place he called home or is it because he wants REVENGE!

The Taking Of Annie Thorne Synopsis

He knows the parents of many of the children he'll be teaching. We also encounter a whole array of people from Joe's past - the horrible Hurst, his sick wife, plus the wonderfully brutal hitwoman, Gloria. Clever horror/thriller with a touch of the supernatural. The scenes set in the 90's, feel like the 90's.

From the opening horrifying sequence to the last spine chilling page I was absolutely gripped and read the book is just two sittings. As an adult, Joe tried to push the past behind him but he knew he couldn't get away forever and with mounting gambling debts hanging over his head and the strange email, Joe knew that it was time to lay the past to rest. When challenged Joe seems to have a pathological need to make his life way more difficult than it already is by making flippant remarks (quite brilliantly, I might add), which provokes more than a raised eye brow in response. In particular I loved sardonic Joe, psychotic Gloria and laid back Brendan. I have to throw in a disclaimer, there are some severe and nasty cases of bullying in this book, which might upset some readers. I think the way that the author is able to portray this suspense is key to the story. Little here can be trusted. Without doubt this brought two King classics to mind – but I can't tell you which because therein lies the land of spoilers. As well as crafting horrific sequences, laden with gory descriptions that crawl under the skin, Tudor is a master at drip-feeding clues and hints throughout the novel, knowing exactly how and when to reveal a plot point to the reader. It took me out of my comfort zone which is the rather prosaic realm of police procedurals and enthralled me to the extent that I read it in one sitting, unable to put it down. I finished it in two days (which is impressive for me). Is it some strange hybrid of the two? And what is the connection if any between the double deaths and the strange disappearance when Joe was a teenager of his beloved sister Annie who although returned after 48 hours was never the same person again.
