Backing Corgan here is guitarist Jeff Schroeder, who appeard on Zeitgeist along with newer Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne. The eclectic nature of the tracks are reminiscent of Mellon Collie but with more restraint to how far the songwriting strays from standard alt rock. I didn't think he had it in him but Billy Corgan and the backing band that comprise The Smashing Pumpkins still have some creativity in the tank and an understanding that a back to basics approach was well deserved at this point in his career. From the fade in of hard rocking opener "Quasar" to the emotional closer of "Wildflower", Oceania is an entertaining and ever unfolding piece of art. There's enough variety throughout and it doesn't get bogged down by atmospherics or repetitiveness. Many songs are lead almost completely by quiet guitars and polite vocal melodies. Its not an aggressive album, more a lush landscape of soaring guitars, synth, bass and drums. Their third best album. There's a sense of triumph over that intense misery by the end of the track, but it's very hard-won.
