One such film mentioned numerous times was Humanoids from the Deep, a film that I could never get my hands on. The canning company, Canco (no really, that's the name) has even sent some VIPs to the town to drum up support, including one of its own scientists. A larger than expected explosion sent a helicopter careening to the ground decapitating Morrow and a child he was carrying. In short, I like the feel of 80's movies- that grainy, unpolished, vaguely exploitative feel that tells you that you're about to be a privy to something that is guaranteed to produce a reaction one way or another. No one is going to hit play on a movie called Humanoids from the Deep so they can get a lesson is socio-political issues regarding fishing rights from the early 1980s. But, in an era where movies like Alien and Halloween were filling theaters with teen fans hungry for more, Humanoids delivers in bloody spades.
Maybe I m wrong-- Roger Corman was ultimately in charge of this flick, after all-- but I honestly believe that Humanoids from the Deep is one of those rare cheap horror films that is just as rewarding to watch with your brain turned on as it is with it turned off. The 2010 blu-ray zoomed in on the picture slightly and removed the black bars on the top and bottom to get to that 1. It turns into a gore-fest at the end. The subplots are all boring and slog the movie down, and the acting can be hit or miss, but overall it's a decent monster flick. Hoedowns the likes of which you've never the extras! I mean, honestly, what did you think was going to happen after all the raping, and the sped up life cycle of these creatures? But still, I was surprised by just how bad this movie was. Not something I necessarily agree with but tits and gore were what sold horror movies in the early 80s, so I understand the production company's thought process, I just don't agree with it. This version features additional gore (an infamous scene involving some terrific makeup). What do you think of Humanoids From The Deep? It's not a great film and I would never claim classic status for it but it is a well crafted piece of exploitation monster sleaze and I still enjoy seeing it today. Reportedly the entire reason that Peeters was fired by Corman, was because she refused to add scenes of the titular Humanoids ripping off women's clothing to expose their nude bodies.
