The Second Mrs. Astor is a work of historical fiction which focuses on Madeline Force (Astor). This was such a well thought out book. I knew little about Colonel Astor and his much younger bride beyond the name. I would have thought that her baby would have given her hope and that she was lucky to have been blessed with a part of her dearly departed larger than life husband who was John Jacob Astor IV. I love how the author was able to paint her realistically. His wooing continues with his attention, which makes her feel as if she's the only person in the universe. In terms of historical fiction, this book did inspire me to look up additional information about John Jacob Astor and Madeline Force Astor. The Second Mrs. Astor is guaranteed to touch the hearts of many readers. By the time they start the journey back, she is five-months gone.

Anyone would have difficulty responding. Does the time period help excuse the age difference between them? Astor's son was heartbroken. Take, for example, Madeleine's age. Although every inch a woman of her time and therefore subordinate to men and the whims of society, Madeline shows extreme courage in following her heart to marry the love of her life and then overcome his loss to mother the son born to them after his death.
