I loved how Watson would get annoyed at Holmes leaving him out of key parts of the investigation and so he would try to work things himself. But Charlotte isn't the only Holmes with secrets, and the mood at her family's Sussex estate is palpably tense. But someone is watching, and Pip may be in more danger than she realizes. But I struggled a lot with the first half of The Last of August. Byron spies Lucas leaving the cabin and follows him, eventually catching up to Lucas by the train tracks that run outside of Jefferson. I sort of expected that– since it's sort of part of the Holmes charm to have the big reveal at the end where all the pieces snap into place.

I'm a little conflicted on the mystery in this installment. Did we miss something on diversity? We do get Jamie's family a little bit-but not much. I feel like Cavallaro capitalised off of so much missed potential from book one here. At the same time I know if I get up and do something, I'm more likely to stay up longer and that can really ruin my daytime life with kids and such. If there was one character I thought I wouldn't like (because I like Jamie so much), it was August. I can't even talk about this leave me alone bye. My Jamie boy peril that I am, as mentioned above, bloodthirsty for. Charlotte's whole family is just PROBLEMATIC. My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars. But after Leander disappears and Charlotte's mom falls ill, the two are shipped off to Berlin to go stay with Charlotte's brother also has August Moriarty working for him. "How to frame children like us for murder. " I didn't see it coming but it all came together so well at the end, and I was left wondering how I missed it.

This book was such a disappointing mess. I hope to get a full review up, but if not, here are my reasons for 3 stars: Cons: -Honestly, just wanted more Jamie and Charlotte (not a bad thing, know). For me, the swoon from this book didn't come from typical swoonworthy moments (and trust, there are some) but rather the way that Watson and Holmes struggle to navigate their feelings without ruining everything they already have. All of them are kind of wrong and weird and uncomfortable and though it makes a lot of sense for the plot and the kind of characters they are, I don't think its the best theme to explore. Something made up from what you wanted from the world and what you got instead. "When I loved August Moriarty, it was that I recognized myself in him and saw that self redeemed.

Except for the one thing that happened that I am very upset about, I get that (although I think it was stupid that it happened but that goes back to me not understanding what was going on). A lot of the backlist titles I've reviewed lately have been the result of audiobooks I've listened to while navigating those troubled nighttime hours. Charlotte is dismissive and condescending. If they were to cross the line from friends to more (which I so desperately want to happen, and what's probably the main reason I really read this book and turned each page), they'd be crossing a literal line and would never be able to go back. And, I mean, she's still a mess in this one, but she's more verbal about knowing these things about herself. Byron Bunch visits Hightower and narrates how the Burden house has burned down. After a while, they became more like a shorthand for who I was and less like things I actually enjoyed. The stranger repeatedly strikes Joe until Joe is close to losing consciousness. He can't help loving her, and she is so cerebral and analytical and feels so broken beyond repair, but loves him in her own way, too. And i'm ready for even more angst in the next book.

There's a lot of people mentioned: all sorts of Holmes, Watson, and Moriarty family members and I had a hard time keeping track of who was who. Charlotte's uncle, especially, is such a nice addition to the story! Leander may not be in the book much, but he's a delight. And who knows, maybe book 3 will be even darker. Quotes to Remember: -. I absolutely never say this, but I would be so down for this series to be like 6 books. He feels everything and wants to be something more than he is and is so in love with Charlotte that it's almost painful. In this book we have none of that. What people want from you, and what you are, underneath it all.
